Today 22 November, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets spoke to OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid to discuss the activities of the OSCE and our region’s current affairs, and confirm Estonia’s OSCE Chairmanship ambition for 2024.

In the phone call, Foreign Minister Liimets underlined that there was a continued need to uphold and implement the OSCE’s founding principles of peace and stability. “For us, the comprehensive scope of the OSCE’s work is important because in addition to security issues, it also deals with human rights and economic and environmental problems, which all can have a serious impact on our security. We need greater political will, a solutions-oriented dialogue and trust between members. I also agree with the Secretary General that the OSCE should pay more attention to the participation of women in peace negotiations and conflict resolution, which is an important part of Estonia’s foreign policy,” Foreign Minister Liimets said.

She also reaffirmed Estonia’s ambition to take on the Chairmanship of the organisation, with 2024 as the earliest available time. The OSCE’s annual ministerial conference is held from 1 to 3 December in Stockholm.
