Estonian economic diplomats want to focus on the practical side of business diplomacy

3. October 2018 - 14:34

A conference of economic diplomats will be held in Tallinn on 1 and 2 October, where Estonian economic diplomats will hold discussions with representatives of the e-Estonia Showroom, Enterprise Estonia, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and various professional associations and meet with entrepreneurs.

“The foreign economy of Estonia is one of the three pillars on which our foreign policy stands,” said Foreign Minister Sven Mikser in his opening speech. “Our economy and its success depend on how well we sell ourselves and our products in the world and how we stand out. Economic diplomats work in our embassies all over the world and keep oiling the cogwheels to make our foreign economy successful.”

The discussions to be held at the conference of economic diplomats will focus on increasing exports by Estonian companies, attracting foreign investments and promoting tourism. The participants will discuss how to create better synergy between the state authorities performing the tasks of business diplomacy and entrepreneurs, how to make it easier for entrepreneurs to enter faraway markets in addition to nearby ones and how to harmonise the priorities of foreign and security policies with the goals of entrepreneurs in foreign countries. One of the topics will be the use of the state’s digital image for the benefit of entrepreneurs.

This year, the goal is to increase the focus on the practical side of business diplomacy and discuss how an economic diplomat could help a specific sector and entrepreneur in their target country, and how to measure successes and use them to boost the economy as a whole.

Some of the conference is meant for bilateral meetings for entrepreneurs, whose representatives can ask economic officials about the topics that interest them, including market entry or continuing with business operations that have already started.

An economic diplomat is a diplomatic representative working in the Estonian embassies whose task is to be informed about the economic conditions in the target country, to advise interested entrepreneurs and help them find useful contacts, and to introduce the business environment and good image of Estonia in order to attract foreign investments and promote tourism.
