Estonian delegation meeting with the Speaker of the Malawian National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Richard Msowoya

Member of Estonian Parliament Mr. Eerik-Niiles Kross met on 15 May 2018 with the Speaker of the Malawian National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Richard Msowoya, the Malawian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano and the Principal Secretary of the Office of the President Mr. Cliff Kenneth Chiundaga.

The Estonian delegation also met with the Head of the European Union Delegation to Malawi Mr. Marchel Gerrmann, who gave an overview of EU-Malawi relations between and the EU’s development cooperation programme.

The Estonian delegation was led by Mr. Eerik Niles Kross, Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Estonia and Member of Parliament. The delegation included Mr. Daniel Schaer, Ambassador-at-Large and Special Diplomatic Representative of the President of the Republic of Estonia and Ms. Kaisa Mitt-Alvarez, counsellor, UN Security Council Task Force of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Malawian side welcomed the visit of the Estonian delegation to Malawi and recognised the visit as a good way to drive bilateral relations. As Malawi is a developing country, it is seeking to learn from the experiences of other states in order to move ahead.

The Malawian interlocutors were particularly interested in Estonia’s experience in developing the “e-state” and cooperation in the areas of infrastructure as well as information and communication technology. Malawi has recently adopted a similar identification document to the Estonian ID card and is looking for opportunities to build on its potential.

The Estonian Delegation also introduced Estonia’s campaign to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2020-2021.
