Estonian Ambassador to Portugal Ruth Lausma Luik presents credentials
Ambassador Ruth Lausma Luik and President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa
Yesterday, on October 1, Estonia’s new Ambassador to Portugal Ruth Lausma Luik presented her credentials to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in Lisbon.
After the ceremony, President Rebelo de Sousa and Ambassador Lausma Luik discussed opportunities to further strengthen relations between Estonia and Portugal. “We would like to enhance cooperation in a number of areas. Portugal is our close NATO ally and an important cooperation partner in the EU and other international organisations,” said Lausma Luik. She thanked the president for Portugal’s contribution to the security of the Baltic Sea region and of Estonia through the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, which was led by the Portuguese Air Force this year. Portugal has also joined the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn.
The meeting also focused on Estonia’s e-governance experience and the President of Portugal expressed interest in cooperation in the field.
Ambassador Ruth Lausma Luik graduated from the Moscow State University where she studied Germanic and Romance languages. She has worked for the Estonian Institute and the Office of the President of Estonia. In 1994 she began work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1996-1997, Lausma Luik was Estonia’s chargé d’affaires in Italy. She was Estonia’s Ambassador to France from 1997-2001 and Estonia’s permanent delegate to UNESCO from 1998-2002. From 2001-2004, Lausma Luik was Estonia’s Ambassador to Andorra residing in Tallinn. Before assuming her current position, Lausma Luik was the Director of the Division of Western Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Lausma Luik speaks English, French, Russian and Italian.
