On 5 November, Estonian Ambassador Miko Haljas presented his credentials to Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, in the League’s headquarters in Cairo.

During the discussion following the presentation ceremony, Secretary-General Aboul Gheit stressed that the Arab League states highly appreciate Estonia’s consistent and coherent policy based on international law when it comes to the key issues of the region, and its openness to working with the League’s member states. Estonia’s consistent policy on key Middle East issues played an important role in ensuring broad support from Arab League states to Estonia’s membership in the UN Security Council.

Ambassador Haljas thanked the Arab League for its support and reaffirmed the importance the developments in the region hold for us. Estonia will continue to contribute to ensuring security and stability in the Middle East and North Africa by participating in missions, providing humanitarian aid and prioritising international law in conflict resolution and prevention. Ambassador Haljas confirmed Estonia’s readiness to continue dialogue on issues that fall within the scope of the UN Security Council.

The meeting also covered the future of the Middle Eastern peace process as well as the situation in Syria and Yemen.

Estonia is represented at the Arab League by its ambassador to Egypt.
