Estonia and Kyrgyzstan hold first bilateral political consultations
On Monday, 19 November, the first political consultations between the foreign ministries of Estonia and the Kyrgyz Republic took place in Bishkek. The director general of the Political Department of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lembit Uibo, who led the Estonian delegation, also met with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Chingiz Aidarbekov.
During the political consultations, the officials discussed relations between the two countries, economic cooperation and high-level visits. “Kyrgyzstan is our most important development cooperation partner in the region,” said Uibo. “Estonia supports continued reforms in Kyrgyzstan for promoting and maintaining democracy, including in the fields of human rights and good governance.”
ICT-related cooperation received separate attention. “Estonia-Kyrgyz cooperation in the field of e-governance started back in 2001 and we are pleased that it continues. We are prepared to assist Kyrgyzstan in building a legislative framework for implementing e-governance,” said Uibo.
The parties also discussed regional developments as well as the European Union’s policy on Central Asia and its relations with Kyrgyzstan. Uibo reaffirmed that Estonia supports closer relations between the EU and Kyrgyzstan.
At the meeting with Foreign Minister Chingiz Aidarbekov, the good relations between Estonia and Kyrgyzstan were affirmed along with the desire to develop them even further, particularly when it comes to economic cooperation.
In April 2017, the first Kyrgyz visit to Estonia at the foreign minister level took place. During the visit, the foreign ministers of the two countries signed a convention for the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion.
