Estonia and the Holy See celebrate a hundred years of diplomatic relations

10. October 2021 - 6:09

Today 10 October marks 100 years since the de jure recognition by the Holy See of the Republic of Estonia.

The Holy See recognised Estonia de facto in 1919 and de jure on 10 October 1921, and has continuously recognised Estonia’s sovereignty since.

The Holy See affirmed this by re-recognising Estonia on 28 August 1991 and by restoring diplomatic relations on 3 October 1991.

Estonia and the Holy See share similar positions and aims on topics such as upholding global peace and security, human rights, multilateralism and protecting the environment, as well as using digital solutions for the common good.
