Australia to open its first pop-up embassy in Tallinn

8. March 2018 - 14:01

On Wednesday, 7 March, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser met in New York with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on her visit to the US and discussed the opening of the Australian pop-up embassy* in Tallinn. During the meeting the foreign ministers also discussed cooperation between Estonia and Australia and EU-Australian trade relations.

“We are pleased that Australia has decided to open its first pop-up embassy in Tallinn. This will doubtlessly make Australia more prominent in Estonia and in our region on the whole,” said the Foreign Minister. “The Ambassador working at the pop-up embassy will certainly expand the already constructive and intensive cooperation that our two countries enjoy,” added Sven Mikser.

The Foreign Minister is confident that the experimental pop-up embassy pilot project will be of interest not just to Australia. “We hope that Australia’s positive example of this innovative pop-up embassy encourages other countries to implement similar cooperation solutions in Estonia,” he said.
In the course of the meeting the foreign ministers reaffirmed the good relations existing between Estonia and Australia, citing the intensifying cooperation in the field of cybersecurity. Talking about the trade relations between the European Union and Australia, Sven Mikser confirmed that Estonia supports entry into a free trade agreement with Australia.

* A pop-up embassy is the country’s legation where the ambassador is not working constantly, but visits occasionally, as the need arises.
