Human Rights in Development Cooperation

Estonia also supports the advancement of women’s rights and situations through development cooperation. We consider achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals related to gender equality and maternal health to be very important. Estonia also pays attention to women’s rights and gender equality in humanitarian aid. The empowerment of women and girls and the protection of their rights must be at the heart of the post-2015 global development agenda.

Since 1998, Estonia voluntarily made regular monetary donations to advance human rights, including those of women, children, and indigenous peoples, through the framework of the UN. Estonia has supported the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the UN Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), the activities of the UN indigenous peoples’ forum and other foundations.
