Estonia and Ecuador recognised one another upon joining the League of Nations. Estonia joined in 1921, Ecuador in 1934.

Ecuador joined the Anti-War Treaty of Non-Aggression and Conciliation in 1933 and was thereby legally bound by the non-recognition of the USSR occupation of the Baltic States.

During Estonia’s first period of independence, Estonia was represented in Guayaquil by honorary consul Mr Aagard-Anders Bjarner.

The Republic of Ecuador recognised the independence of the Republic of Estonia on 2 September 1991.

Diplomatic relations were established on 22 October 1992 via the UN representatives of both countries.

The ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador, Mr Mario Aníbal Guerrero Murgueytio presented his credentials on 17 September 2012. The embassy of the Republic of Ecuador is located in Stockholm.

The honorary consul of the Republic of Estonia in Ecuador is Dr Gustavo Romero Ponce who resides in Quito.

Ecuador does not have an honorary consul in Estonia.

Bilateral agreements

No agreements have yet been concluded between Ecuador and Estonia.


No reciprocal visits have taken place between Ecuador and Estonia and no agreements have been concluded.

Estonian citizens may stay in Ecuador visa-free for up to 90 days at a time.

In 2012, mainly mineral products as well as machinery and equipment were exported.


Direct investments

According to the Bank of Estonia, the amount of Ecuadorian direct investments as at 31 March 2013 has not been disclosed due to data protection principles. The main sector is real estate.

Estonia does not hold direct investments in Ecuador.
