The Foreign Ministry is supporting the Lifeline Embattled NGOs Assistance Fund created by the government of the United States with 20 000 euros. The goal of the fund is to protect the activities of non-governmental organisations in countries where they could easily become victims of political repression. The creation of the fund was initiated by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that like the USA, Estonia also considers supporting the work of NGOs to be essential, especially in countries where the political situation inhibits their activities. "Estonia's more concrete interest is to protect the activities and security of people involved in NGOs in Belarus. In co-operation with the USA we have already started supporting NGOs in Belarus and would definitely like to continue with such activities," said Paet.

The foreign minister added that Estonia's goal is to support the development of civil society and democracy all over the world. "Therefore we are, in co-operation with the USA and many other partners, consistent supporters and ensurers of democracy, security and human rights in many countries in the world that have the desire to move towards a free and open society," said Paet.
