UN Development Programme expresses interest in Estonian e-governance expertise

7. March 2018 - 18:12

On Wednesday 7 March Foreign Minister Sven Mikser met with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) administrator Achim Steiner in New York to discuss the importance of digital solutions in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

“Estonia’s been a donor to the UNDP for almost 20 years and we want to remain just as active in the contribution we make in the future,” Mikser said at his meeting with Steiner. “Estonia’s position is that digital solutions should form an inseparable part of the activities of the UN, since their widespread use will contribute to achieving SDGs.”

The Foreign Minister added that the UNDP had expressed great interest in Estonia’s IT and digital solutions. “We’ve already shared our experience in the field of e-governance with the UN,” he said. “But there’s potential for more, and we’d definitely like to take our cooperation further.” During the meeting the Foreign Minister also raised the possibility of organising a joint event on the topic of e-governance during the opening week of the UN General Assembly.

The Foreign Minister also met with UN Special Representative for International Migration Louise Arbour, with whom he discussed the current situation in global migration.

Mikser expressed his satisfaction with Europe’s progress in dealing with the migration crisis. “Half as many illegal immigrants arrived in Europe in 2017 as they did in 2016, and one-sixth as many as in 2015,” he explained. “But we still need to bear in mind that migration’s a global problem that needs global solutions.” Mikser added that coordinated cooperation at the international level needs to be reinforced, referring to the Global Compact on Migration being negotiated at the UN.
