Ministry of Foreign Affairs helps to improve the situation of Haitians affected by the hurricane with 50,000 euros through the Word Health Organisations (WHO).

According to Foreign Minister Jürgen Ligi, the hurricane that hit Haiti has caused a catastrophe and help of the international community to alleviate the situation is definitely necessary. “At the moment it is most important to focus on helping the people in the region and supply them with essentials for life. Many smaller health care centres have also been hit and a fast reconstruction of those is essential,” Ligi said and added that one of the biggest challenges for Haiti is to stop the spreading of diseases caused by lack of clean water.

Also, Foreign Ministry funded a two-member rescue team of the Estonian Rescue Board that departed to Haiti on Sunday to deal with the consequences of the hurricane and coordinate aid. Ministry of Foreign Affairs allocated 48,800 euros to cover the cost of the mission.

Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti on October 4. Hundreds of people were killed, it affected around 2.2 million people and of them, 1.4 million people are in need of humanitarian aid.
