Mikser: transatlantic cooperation is one of the cornerstones of security

5. December 2017 - 20:44

At today’s meeting of EU foreign ministers with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser thanked the US for its commitment to European defence and welcomed the meeting taking place during the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

“Transatlantic dialogue and cooperation are one of the cornerstones of security," Mikser said. “European countries are increasing defence spending and taking more and more responsibility on regional security issues, but it isn’t said enough that we can always rely on American support.

"And the Americans can always rely on Europe,” Mikser added.

According to Mikser, the EU and the US face common challenges they must face together. “We hope that the Iran nuclear deal is preserved and a solution outside the nuclear deal is found for concerns related to Iran,” Mikser said. “Also, we all would like to have constructive relations with Russia, but it depends mostly on Russia’s willingness and actions,” Mikser added.

After the meeting with Rex Tillerson, a meeting of NATO foreign ministers followed.
