Mikser: strong strategic partnership between the US and the Baltic states was reaffirmed

According to Foreign Minister Sven Mikser, it was reaffirmed today at the meeting of the Baltic foreign ministers and the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that strong strategic partnership between the Baltic states and the US continues.

“The US is our important ally and in addition to common interests and security challenges we share common values,” said Foreign Minister Mikser. Baltic foreign ministers thanked the US for its long-term contribution to the security of the Baltic states and Europe and reaffirmed that Baltic states are committed to fulfilling their defence obligations. Tillerson, for his part, confirmed that the US support for NATO is unwavering.

The foreign ministers also emphasised the importance of fight against non-conventional threats. “Cyber security is an integral part of a wider security concept and it is evident that in the future we have to address this issue together,” emphasised Mikser. Foreign ministers agreed that when it comes to cyber security, it is important to also thinks about regulation in this area.

Talking about fight against terrorism, foreign ministers affirmed the need to strengthen international coordination and cooperation. “Terrorism is our common challenge and Estonia also wants to contribute to fight against terrorism according to our capabilities,” emphasised Mikser. According to Tillerson, the US appreciates the Baltic states' contribution to fight against terrorism.
Ministers also discussed energy security, transatlantic free trade and strategic communication.
