Mikser: Estonian Presidency will help to ensure continuation of EU-Turkey dialogue

18. July 2017 - 18:00

Today, while on a visit to Turkey, Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser reaffirmed that the good relations between the two countries would continue and that Estonia wishes to contribute further to EU-Turkey dialogue. In meetings with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and speaker of Parliament İsmail Kahraman, Turkey’s domestic political situation and regional security were also covered.

Mikser said the Estonian Presidency would work to improve EU-Turkey relations. “We support the EU’s open dialogue with Turkey, a country with which the EU has many common interests – the statement on migration, the economy, cooperation in the fight against terrorism, customs union,” said Mikser. “Strong cooperation between the EU and Turkey is necessary for overcoming common challenges.” Mikser said the European Union’s enlargement policy is based on clear criteria and that the EU expected all candidates, including Turkey, to abide by European standards in furthering democracy and the rule of law.

Mikser recognised Turkey for its contribution to resolving the migration issue. “Fulfilment of the EU-Turkey Statement is very important to solving Europe’s migration crisis and we recognise Turkey for hosting 3.2 million refugees.” He said the migrant issue was likewise a priority for Estonia during its Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Mikser expressed sympathy for relatives those killed or injured in the coup attempt in Turkey a year ago. He said the measures adopted by Turkey following the attempt to overthrow the government had to be in conformity with the principles of rule of law, including everyone’s right to due process.

Mikser also met Kemal Kilicdaroglu and Öztürk Yilmaz, chairman and deputy chairman, respectively of the main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party; and Christian Berger, the head of the European Union delegation to Turkey, to discuss developments on the domestic political front.
