Mikser and Ukrainian counterpart discuss situation in eastern Ukraine
Foreign Minister Sven Mikser and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine today, and Mikser reaffirmed Estonia’s wish to maintain the EU’s common policy.
Mikser assured his counterpart that the EU stands up for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. “The Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU works to maintain the EU’s principled policy towards Russia,” Mikser emphasised. The foreign ministers also confirmed the importance of transatlantic cooperation. “We must work on every level and use every opportunity to facilitate the implementation of the Minsk agreements,” Mikser said.
Mikser expressed hope that the situation in eastern Ukraine will improve. “The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine has already resulted in 10,000 deaths and 23,500 injured and we cannot remain bystanders,” the minister said. “Estonia is and will remain Ukraine’s firm supporter,” he affirmed. This month, Estonia allocated €400,000 to UN organisations to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in eastern Ukraine. Since the beginning of 2014, Estonia has allocated €2.8 million as humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
The foreign ministers also discussed the Eastern Partnership Summit taking place in Brussels in November and expressed hope that it will produce concrete steps that would motivate the Eastern Partnership countries to move forward with reforms.
Yesterday evening, Foreign Minister Mikser met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman. They discussed economic cooperation, with Mikser pointing out Estonian companies’ interest in the Ukrainian market. “Improving the business environment will help to realise their interest. Estonian companies would like to see that principles of the rule of law are ensured in Ukraine,” Mikser said.
