Today, 8 June, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser met with his Finnish counterpart Timo Soini to discuss relations between the two countries, security in the Baltic Sea region and Brexit.

Mikser said that relations between Estonia and Finland were very good and very close and that meetings with his Finnish colleague always proved fruitful. “The very first joint session of the Estonian and Finnish governments which took play in early May was a real milestone in our relations, and also served to mark the centenary of both our countries,” he said. “We also work very closely together on economic matters with the aim of jointly fostering ties between Estonia and Finland in the fields of transport, energy and the e-state.”

Discussing security in the Baltic Sea region, the ministers shared many views and underscored the importance of continuing to pursue a single foreign and security policy within the European Union and NATO. “Regardless of the fact that Finland isn’t part of NATO, they have an important role to play in ensuring the security of the Baltic Sea region,” Mikser said. “We’re agreed on the fact that the unified approach and policy coordination between EU Member States in regard to Russia must continue.”

In discussing Brexit negotiations the ministers agreed that it is important to both Estonia and Finland that close working relations be maintained between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Estonia running for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council was also discussed during the meeting.
