At today’s European Union-League of Arab States meeting in Cairo, Foreign Ministers focused on cooperation, security and stability. In his speech, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser drew attention to conflicts in Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East and in Ukraine and also to e-partnership and innovation.
“Despite international efforts, the conflict in Syria continues and the lives of innocent people are lost. “We have to pay more attention to the root causes of the ongoing conflicts, but that requires the attention and cooperation of neighbouring countries, partners and the international community,” Foreign Minister said. In his address, Mikser also pointed out the Middle East peace process and reaching its solution that should not be forgotten nor driven to the background. “Neither should we forget Ukraine which we paid particular attention to two years ago and have to continue to do so. It is important to find a peaceful solution to all conflicts in the neighbourhood of Europe,” Foreign Minister said.
On the positive side, Foreign Minister highlighted the opportunities of modern technology. “Today, innovation and e-solutions give a competitive advantage for economic development. E-partnership cooperation between European and Arab states requires more attention to create a better quality public services and strengthen good governance. That is where Estonia can offer support with its experiences,” the Foreign Minister finished his speech.
In the first half of the day, Foreign Minister had a bilateral meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority Riyad al-Maliki. Main topics discussed included the current situation of the Middle East peace process, bilateral cooperation, including in the field of e-governance and e-services, where cooperation has already been established.
Yesterday, Foreign Minister also met with the Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
