Estonian and Mexican delegations meeting in Mexico City
On 21 February, the Estonian delegation led by Deputy Secretary General for Economic Development of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications Mr. Viljar Lubi met in Mexico City with colleagues from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Director General for the United Nations Organisation Ambassador Luis Javier Campuzano.
The Estonian delegation included Ambassador-at-Large Mr. Daniel Schaer and Ms. Mari Tomingas from the United Nations Security Council Campaign Task Force as well as Estonian Honorary Consul in Mexico City Mr. Claude Le Brun.
The delegations discussed Mexico’s and Estonia’s current candidatures to the United Nations Security Council, for the period 2021-2022 and 2020-2021 respectively. Mexico shared its experiences as a non permanent member of the Council from two previous occasions and its preparations for this role.
Additionally, various areas were touched upon, which might prove interesting for bilateral cooperation. Estonian representatives inquired about the political situation in the region as well as Mexico’s upcoming presidential and general elections.
The representatives of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that the representation of small states in the UN Security Council is important. They noted that Estonia’s priority areas of standing for the greater accountability of the members of the Security Council, increasing the transparency of the Council’s work, as well as drawing more attention to conflict prevention coincide with those of Mexico. This provides a good foundation for enhancing cooperation between the two countries in New York and the various UN bodies.
On 11 July started yet another of Estonia’s United Nations Security Council campaign visit, this time to the countries of North Caribbean and Central America. Estonian delegation is led by a Member of the Estonian Parliament and the President’s Advisory Council Mr. Mart Nutt, who is accompanied by Ambassador Margus Kolga and diplomat Mari Tomingas.
