Estonia is helping the victims of the earthquake in Nepal

29. April 2015 - 17:44

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said that Estonia will help to alleviate the situation of the people affected by the earthquake in Nepal with 50 000 euros through the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO is providing life-saving first aid to the victims of the earthquake in Nepal and is supporting the delivery of health services. “The earthquake victims are in need of first aid, post-trauma counselling, as well as the usual medical care. Unfortunately, hospitals are overloaded or destroyed, and there is also a lack of medicines and medical instruments. People in need of medical care are being treated in the streets,” Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said. The WHO is working with local hospital staff and medical groups to help those in need.

Nepal's government has turned to the international community for help. The UN has activated its humanitarian aid system and sent an evaluation and analysis team to Nepal. Search and rescue teams and medical teams have arrived in Nepal from neighbouring countries to offer assistance. International humanitarian organizations already operating in Nepal have mapped sector-specific relief needs and are asking for donor support.

On the morning of April 25, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, the epicentre of which was northwest of Kathmandu. This was followed by several aftershocks and another magnitude 6.7 earthquake. 35 regions in western and central Nepal are greatly affected by the destruction, including the country's two largest cities – Kathmandu and Pokhara. According to the UN, over four thousand people have been killed and more than seven thousand people are injured. The number of earthquake victims continues to grow, since rescue workers have not yet reached all the disaster areas. It is estimated that the earthquake has affected over 8 million people.
