Today, political consultations between the foreign ministries of Estonia and Sweden were held in Stockholm where the representatives of the two countries discussed bilateral relations, regional cooperation and topical EU affairs. The Estonian delegation was led by Foreign Ministry’s Director General of the Department for European Affairs Aino Lepik von Wirén and the Swedish delegation was led by Deputy Director General for European Affairs Mikaela Kumlin-Granit.
Lepik von Wirén affirmed the good relations between Estonia and Sweden. “Sweden is one of the most important trading partners for Estonia, Estonia’s economy is closely intertwined with Sweden’s. Sweden is one of our main export partners and also our biggest foreign investor,” Lepik von Wirén said and added that Estonia highly appreciates Nordic-Baltic cooperation framework which enables open dialogue with our closest partners to further strengthen regional cooperation.
Speaking about the EU, both countries emphasised the importance of the unity of the EU. “Maintaining the unity of the EU is a key topic for Estonia as well as other European countries. This is also reflected in the European Council’s guidelines on the framework for the future EU-UK relationship adopted last week and in the Member States’ response to the Salisbury attack,” Lepik von Wirén added.

The delegations also discussed migration policy, the multiannual financial framework of the EU, Brexit and the strategy for the Western Balkans.
