The annual contest announced for the Joint Award for the Promotion of the Latvian and Estonian Languages

The Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia are pleased to announce the contest for the annual Latvian and Estonian Language Promotion Award (Languages Award). In accordance with the Award Regulations, a translation, a piece of research, or a Latvian language teacher in Estonia or an Estonian language teacher in Latvia can be nominated to receive the Languages Award for the promotion of the Latvian and Estonian languages in 2017. The Jury’s decision on a winner will be made in the spring of 2018. The winner will be announced by the Latvian and Estonian Foreign Ministers.

The aim of the Languages Award is to promote the knowledge and use of the Latvian and Estonian languages, to recognize the achievements of Latvian and Estonian translators, linguists and teachers in the promotion of the Latvian and Estonian languages. The Languages Award also contributes to strengthening Latvian and Estonian cultural cooperation, which is especially important this year when we celebrate the centenary of our countries.
The monetary value of the Award is 3,000 euros and the Award Fund receives equal contributions from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia. The Jury of the Award consists of representatives from the Latvian and Estonian Ministries of Foreign Affairs as well as language and literature experts from both countries.

In previous years, the award has been granted to Maima Grīnberga in 2009 and 2012, to Guntars Godiņš in 2010 and 2013, to Kalev Kalkun in 2011, to Margus Konnula (Contra) in 2014, and to Valts Ernštreits in 2015. In 2016, the award went to Livia Viitol for her translations of a poetry collection "Eyes of the Sea" by Astrīde Ivaska and a collection of stories "Breakfast at Midnight" by Valentīns Jākobsons.

Award candidates for 2017 can be nominated until 14 March. The contest application and the Curriculum Vitae of the nominee can be submitted by e-mail to or by post to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islandi väljak 1, 15049 Tallinn with reference to “Languages Award”.
