The New Data Visualisation Project by the Estonian Presidency of the EU Council
The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has developed a new digital tool – the EU Sanctions Map. The EU Sanctions Map will be launched end of September. It will then be publicly available for everyone. After Estonia’s EU Presidency, the tool will be handed over to the EU Commission that will then start maintaining it.
Sanctions are a foreign policy tool that is increasingly used by the EU in the pursuit of peace and security. Sanctions are always part of a wider foreign policy approach towards a matter of a geographic or thematic nature.
However, they are not just political statements. There is also an obligation for everyone in the EU, that is, the Member States, businesses and citizens, to abide by sanctions.
At the moment, there is no quick and easy way to find up-to-date information on sanctions in force. The measures of the thirty to forty sanction regimes currently applicable in the EU are described in hundreds of complex legal acts.
This makes it difficult and time-consuming to find out whether a transaction is compliant with sanction measures or not. Each day, EU and Member State institutions respond to thousands of inquiries from administrations and businesses who are unsure about the sanctions they need to follow. This is burdensome for the both and in the whole Union.
Estonia developed the EU Sanctions Map to help solve this problem. The EU Sanctions Map visualises all of the sanctions regimes on a world map, which helps users access relevant and up-to-date information in just a few clicks.
This data visualisation tool makes EU sanctions policies more transparent and comprehensible to the public.
