The Republic of Nicaragua recognised Estonia upon the latter joining the League of Nations on 22 September 1921.

Nicaragua was also one of the first to recognise the regained independence of the Republic of Estonia, announcing it on 2 September 1991.

Nicaragua is also one of the countries that never recognised the Soviet occupation of the Baltic States.

Diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nicaragua were established on 5 March 2004.

The current ambassador Dr Ricardo José Alvarado Noguera resides at the embassy of the Republic of Nicaragua in Helsinki.


On 25 November 2010, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet met with the Nicaraguan Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Santos Lopez during his visit to Estonia.

Estonian citizens may stay in Nicaragua visa-free for up to 90 days within six months.

Trade with Nicaragua is very modest; in 2012, the trade turnover barely exceeded EUR 41,000. Estonia exported nearly EUR 35,000 worth of goods to Nicaragua, with mineral fuels being the main export article.

Estonia has mainly imported tobacco from Nicaragua.
