(last updated: 11.11.2014)

El Salvador recognised Estonia upon Estonia’s accession to the League of Nations on 22 September 1921.

Diplomatic relations were established on 12 February 2001. El Salvador’s first ambassador to Estonia, Byron Fernando Larios López, presented his credentials on 9 May 2002. Since 10 November 2005 El Salvador’s ambassador to Estonia is Martin Rivera Gómez, who resides in Stockholm.

Meetings

Two high level meetings took place at the UN General Assembly in New York in September 2004. Estonian President Arnold Rüütel met with his El Salvadorian counterpart Elías Antonio Saca on 21 September and Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristiina Ojuland met with El Salvadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs Francisco E. Laínez on 22 September.

Agreements

The only bilateral agreement that was in force between Estonia and El Salvador was an agreement on the waiver of visa requirements. After Estonia became a member of the European Union, a reciprocal visa waiver was established through the exchange of notes, and Estonian citizens may reside in El Salvador without a visa for up to 90 days at a time. Citizens of El Salvador can be in Estonia (or any other Schengen zone country) for up to 90 days during a six-month period without a visa.

In June 2012 the European Union and its member states concluded an association agreement with the Central American countries (including El Salvador) that covers three main areas – political dialogue, co-operation, and trade.
